Asagiri was born on March 17, 1984 in Ehime, Japan. Before starting to work on the Bungo Stray Dogs series, he originally worked as a salaried employee at a car company. During his second and third year, he began to think that he could become a scenario writer, but his job was demanding and did not allow him to work and write stories, so Asagiri decided to leave it in early 2012 to pursue a career in scenario writing.

After leaving the job he decided to create things while still looking for a writing job, during this time he created a Niconico channel and made videos. He would create a series of videos titled "Yukkuri Yōmu and the really scary Cthulhu myths" with the character from the Touhou series Yōmu Konpaku in Yukkuri form explaining the Cthulhu myths that quickly became popular. Soon, this series would receive a novelization titled "Minase Yōmu and the really scary Cthulhu myths".

Four months after uploading the video series, the editor-in-chief of Monthly Shōnen Ace approached him to present three projects within two weeks and later the editorial department of Young Ace also approached him. Soon, he came up with the idea of Bungō Stray Dogs based on the idea that authors would be drawn as young adults and teenagers with special abilities.
