In der Retrospektive wird ihr Werk jedenfalls als Gesellschaftsroman rezipiert. Das gesellschaftliche Klima der damaligen Zeit wird in dem Roman in unterhaltsamer Weise deutlich und selbst Reich-Ranicki, der nicht gerade für seine Zurückhaltung in Kritikerdingen bekannt war, zählte den Kriminalroman zu den literarisch beachtlichen Büchern seiner Jugend.
