El fútbol en la Alemania dividida fue un reflejo de los diferentes sistemas políticos de ambos países; en él confluyeron las imágenes que los mismos pretendían mostrar al mundo. Si en la RFA el fútbol tendría muy pronto una imagen profesionalizada, convirtiéndose en una forma más de espectáculo y de negocio con cada vez mayor peso de las estrellas del balón; en la RDA, por el contrario, previvió el espíritu amateur, potenciando el colectivo por encima de las individualidades, cuyo fin era construir una sociedad socialista.
