Hector Berlioz publie en 1843 un "Grand Traité d'instrumentation et d'orchestration modernes" dont il donne une édition augmentée de L'art du chef d'orchestre en 1855: il y manifeste de façon éclatante sa créativité de musicien et d'écrivain. Ce volume tente de montrer l'originalité de sa démarche à une époque où la facture instrumentale se développe considérablement, mais où Berlioz est presque l'un des seuls à mener en France une réflexion d'ensemble sur l'orchestre. Dans ce texte surprenant, où se mêlent rêve utopique sur l'orchestre idéal et conseils très précis livrés aux instrumentistes et aux chefs, envolées lyriques et analyses d'exemples musicaux, l'orchestre apparaît comme un vaste théâtre où se joue l'avenir de l'art.
