Estamos ante una novela distópica publicada en 1949, que se enfoca en la vida de Winston Smith, un miembro de bajo rango del Partido, quien vive frustrado bajo la mirada omnipresente de sus compaeros y en especial de su gobernante, llamado el Gran Hermano. Ambientada en un Londres sumido por un gobierno de régimen totalitario, el Gran Hermano controla todos los aspectos de la vida de las personas, incluso inventó una neolengua con el fin de eliminar por completo cualquier tipo de rebelión poltica. En este contexto el protagonista inicia una sutil rebelión contra el Partido llevando un diario de sus pensamientos secretos, lo que supone un crimen de pensamiento mortal. Junto con su amante Julia, sostiene una lucha por la libertad y la justicia, en un mundo en el que nadie más parece ver, o no ver, la opresión a la que se opone. Orwell explora con eficacia una serie de temas asociados al poder y nos muestra una realidad aterradora, en la cual el control total de toda una nación bajo un estado totalitario es perfectamente posible. Si el mundo cayera bajo el control de uno o incluso de varios dictadores, el futuro podra convertirse fácilmente en un mundo retorcido y cruel en el que cada movimiento, palabra y respiración podran ser vigilados por un poder omnipotente y omnipresente al que nadie puede detener, o incluso oponerse sin temor a la muerte. George Orwell fue considerado en el 2008 como el mejor cronista de la cultura inglesa del siglo XX. Sus obras abarcaron una amplia diversidad de temas relacionados a la sociedad de Inglaterra, a la poltica y a la literatura, los cuales siguen resonando hasta nuestros das.

Eric Arthur Blair (Motihari, British Raj, June 25, 1903-London, United Kingdom, January 21, 1950), known by his pen name George Orwell, was a British novelist, journalist, essayist, and critic born in India, author among other works of the dystopian novels Animal Farm (1945) and 1984 (1949)

His work bears the mark of autobiographical experiences lived by the author in three stages of his life: his position against British imperialism which led him to commit as a representative of the colonial law enforcement forces in Burma during his youth; in favor of democratic socialism, after having observed and suffered the living conditions of the working social classes in London and Paris; and against Nazi and Stalinist totalitarianisms after his participation in the Spanish Civil War, on the Republican side

In addition to being a chronicler, literary critic, and novelist, he is one of the most prominent essayists in the English language of the 1930s and 1940s. He is also known for his criticisms of totalitarianism in his allegorical short novel Animal Farm (1945) and his dystopian novel 1984 (1949), written in his last years of life and published shortly before his death, in which he creates the concept of "Big Brother," which has since entered the common language of criticism of modern surveillance techniques.
