Durante 1983 ocurrieron en Chile las primeras protestas masivas contra la dictadura de Pinochet. Por el contexto de un régimen represivo y porque la única edición disponible era una española alterada por el franquismo, tres periodistas tradujeron de noche, durante los toques de queda, esta emblemática obra de George Orwell con la ilusión de que el año 1984 no fuera como 1984. Winston Smith es funcionario del ministerio de la verdad. Su trabajo consiste en reescribir noticias antiguas que puedan desprestigiar el camino que tomó el Gran Hermano, líder de la nación. Así como se manipula la información y la historia, hay un control total de las personas, sus posibilidades e incluso sus afectos. Una neolengua limita las formas de pensar. Todos son vigilados pero Winston logra esconderse para escribir un diario que despierta su memoria: ¿había algo antes de la revolución? ¿Puede ser distinto el mundo? Solo tener ese pensamiento es un crimen. Y contra eso hay policías. El terror a ser vaporizado y la esperanza de recuperar algo que no sabe qué es, son suficientes para seguir rompiendo reglas. Luego viene el amor y, por supuesto, la disidencia.

Eric Arthur Blair (Motihari, British Raj, June 25, 1903-London, United Kingdom, January 21, 1950), known by his pen name George Orwell, was a British novelist, journalist, essayist, and critic born in India, author among other works of the dystopian novels Animal Farm (1945) and 1984 (1949)

His work bears the mark of autobiographical experiences lived by the author in three stages of his life: his position against British imperialism which led him to commit as a representative of the colonial law enforcement forces in Burma during his youth; in favor of democratic socialism, after having observed and suffered the living conditions of the working social classes in London and Paris; and against Nazi and Stalinist totalitarianisms after his participation in the Spanish Civil War, on the Republican side

In addition to being a chronicler, literary critic, and novelist, he is one of the most prominent essayists in the English language of the 1930s and 1940s. He is also known for his criticisms of totalitarianism in his allegorical short novel Animal Farm (1945) and his dystopian novel 1984 (1949), written in his last years of life and published shortly before his death, in which he creates the concept of "Big Brother," which has since entered the common language of criticism of modern surveillance techniques.

Es una excelente lectura sobretodo en la situación actual de nuestro país y el mundo. El único detalle de la edición es que tiene algunos errores tipográficos. Nada grave. La elegí solo porque es una traducción realizada en 1983 en Chile.
