የኢትዮጵያ ታሪከ ነገሥት ዋንኛው ዓላማ የንጉሡን ጀግነነት መግለጽ ነው። ነገሥታት መንግሥታቸውንና ህዝባቸውን ለመታደግ ራሳቸውን በጀግነነት ለመሰዋት ግንባር ቀደም መሆናቸውንም ለማሳየት የተቀመረ የታሪክ ሰነድ ነው። ታሪክ ጸሐፊው ንጉሡ ሕዝቡንና የግዛቱን አስተዳደር ሁኔታ በተመለከተ በወገንተኝነት ያንጸባርቅበታል። የንጉሡን ወገን አጋኖ ቢያቀርብም የዘመኑን የታሪክ ክዋኔ በማቅረብ ረገድ ከታሪከ ነገሥት የተሻለ ሰነድ አይገኝም። ለዚህም ነው ለኢትዮጵያ የመካከለኛው ዘመን አብይ የታሪክ ምንጭ ሆኖ የቆየው። የ1893 (እ.ኤ.አ.) የንጉሥ ዘርአ ያቆብና የንጉሥ በእደ ማርያም እና በ1894 (እ.ኤ.አ.) የንጉሥ እስክንድር፣ንጉሥ አምደ ጽዮንና የንጉሥ ናኦድ ታሪክ የፈረንሳይኛ ትርጉም ብዙ ስሕተት ያለበትና ከአንድ ምዕተ ዓመት በላይ የቆየ በመሆኑና የጀርመኑ የታሪክ ነገሥት አርትኦት ለኢትዮጵያውን ተደራሽ ባለመሆኑ ምክንያት ነው። በተለየም ኢትዮጵያዊን አንባቢዎች ከታሪካቸው ምንጭ ጋር በቀላሉ እንዲተዋወቁ ማድረግ በማስፈለጉም ነው። ለዚህ ትርጉም ሥራ ሦስት አበይት የታሪክ ነገሥት ቅጂዎችን ተጠቅመናል። እነዚህም ከላይ የጠቀስናቸው ሁለቱ የጁል ፕሩሾንና6 የማንፍሬድ ክሮፕ ሰነዶችና ከዛሬዋ አትሮንሰ ማርያም7 በ1999 ዓ.ም. የአገኘናቸው የታሪከ ነገሥት ቅጂዎችን ያካትታል።
