Synopsis "617"

Walter Colton set out to hike one hundred miles of Texas's Lone Star Hiking Trail in five days. He packed down to the ounce and planned every mile. What he didn't plan for was an unexpected detour to deal with complications from dehydration. Fighting against exhaustion and a failing body on a never-ending road the exertion would bring back memories he'd spent a lifetime outrunning. With every step, the past closes in. There's a boyhood in Newton Upper Falls, Massachusetts, with a mother slowly slipping into a world of paranoia, secret affairs and a cancer no one could see. There are midnight escapes from Hells Angels who never came. There's a younger brother he tried to protect, even as their lives pulled them toward chaos and violence. Then comes the escape into the Air Force, and the week in April 2013 when his hometown was shaken by the Boston Marathon bombing.Told with raw honesty and dark, unexpected humor, 617 is a memoir of survival and of the weight we carry, whether it's in a backpack or in our hearts. It's also about why some of us keep walking when every reason says to stop. Read more
