Robert S. Frost (1942-2013) was an educator, string specialist, and conductor for over 30 years in the Cache County School District in Utah. He utilized his expertise as a classroom and private studio teacher to compose, arrange, and author over 250 works, including a great number of method books and literature collections. Over the years, Dr. Frost was honored with awards for his work and many of his publications appear on selective music lists nationwide. In 2010, Utah ASTA recognized him with their “Lifetime Achievement” award.
Frost earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Education from Utah State University and his doctorate in Music Education from the University of Northern Colorado. He held leadership positions in state and national organizations, including President of the Utah State Chapter of the American String Teachers Association (2000-02) and the National School Orchestra Association (1987-89). He served as guest lecturer and clinician, and conducted honor orchestras at many state, national, and international music educators conferences.
Some of Robert Frost’s most notable method book publications include All for Strings, Viva Vibrato, String Techniques for Superior Musical Performance, and Rhythm Techniques for Superior Musical Performance.
Gerald E. Anderson earned B.S. and M.S Degrees in Music Education at the University of Illinois, where he participated in the Concert Band, Marching Illini, and University Symphony. He was elected to membership in both Phi Mu Alpha-Sinfonia and Pi Kappa Lambda, and was a recipient of the A. A. Harding Award, presented to the most outstanding university bandsman. Subsequently, he spent three years playing trumpet in the United States Military Academy Band at West Point. Mr. Anderson taught instrumental music for nineteen years at all levels of public education, from elementary school through community college. For six years he served as Director of Instrumental Music at Paul Revere Junior High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Later, he was employed by the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, and taught instrumental music at two elementary schools and at Santa Monica High School, the latter being where he served for eleven years as conductor of orchestras and assistant conductor of bands. Mr. Anderson molded the Samohi Symphony into one of the finest secondary school music organizations in the United States, recognized for its artistry through invitational performances for conventions of the Music Educators' National Conference in San Francisco, San Diego, Salt Lake City, and Tucson. He also founded the Samohi Chamber Orchestra, enabling fourteen of his finest string players to rehearse and perform distinctive literature for advanced string ensemble. During Mr. Anderson's tenure, the Santa Monica High School Symphony, Chamber Orchestra, and all other instrumental ensembles under his direction earned superior ratings at every district and regional festival in which they participated. Mr. Anderson also conducted several musical theatre productions and served as a master teacher for graduate students in instrumental music from the University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Southern California. In his sixteen years as a Lecturer in Music Education at the University of California, Los Angeles, Mr. Anderson supervised student teachers and taught courses in instrumental techniques, instrumental curriculum/literature, musicianship, and conducting. During his time there he also conducted the UCLA Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, Concert Band, Marching Band, and Varsity Band. Mr. Anderson has authored or co-authored various instrumental music publications that are used in schools throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, including the following: author: Essentials for Strings, string technique method; co-author: All for Strings, comprehensive string method, Books I, II, and III; All for Strings Theory, Books I and II; All for Strings Solos & Etudes, Books I and II; Best in Class, comprehensive band method, Books I and II; Encore, for concert band; Orchestra Expressions, comprehensive string curriculum, Books I and II; and editor: Harmonized Rhythms, for string orchestra. Mr. Anderson has also composed and arranged numerous selections for string orchestra.
Mr. Anderson's professional affiliations include membership in the Music Educators' National Conference, American String Teachers' Association, and the California Music Educators' Association. An honorary life member of the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association, he has held various elective offices, has conducted numerous honor groups, and has frequently served as an adjudicator, clinician, and guest conductor throughout the United States, Australia, Singapore, and Taiwan. Alfred Music Publishing joins the Anderson family in grieving the untimely loss of Gerald E. Anderson. He was a remarkably talented composer, author, director and professor and will be dearly missed by his colleagues and students.
