In the early 1900's when I was a little girl, we lived in the woods of northwestern Arkansas. We were poor, but even so we had many blessings all around us. This is the story of a little girl, who was unwanted from birth. It is a story of perseverance and grit. It is the story of how friendship and love can give birth to an open mind. Lu's love of the woods free's the torments of her mind and brings joy to her aching heart. Lu is very small when she realizes life is going to be what she makes of it. All from a very young age this child knew isolation, poverty natural disasters, bootlegging, prejudice and the white knights of the KKK. But, she also knew the love of two sisters and a brother, the joy of true friendship, the tireless energy of perseverance, the bounty and beauty of Mother Nature, and the blessing of believing in God. This is the tale of a young girl and her deep love for nature and how her childhood friend helps give birth to her relationship with God and the importance of an open mind. A passion to get an education is born out of a need to care for herself and make a better way.
