Synopsis "A War With No Last Chapter"

An overslept Champion of Light, his old teacher and two bickering assassins: a family worth keeping, and an enemy who has rehearsed their ending for eighty years. Before the world had a name, two divine lovers quarrelled until whole worlds burned. So they made a promise with teeth: from then on they would fight only through mortal Champions, in a cyclical war built so that nobody could ever win it for good. The Champion of Light has overslept. Samo Dencharl said yes while bleeding to death in a wood, and expected a ten-year nap. He wakes eighty years late to a Beyond World far darker than he left it. The sun has been gone for two decades, and everyone he knew has grown old or died without him. All that remains is his old teacher, who has waited all this time and is still a lousy driver and a shameless fibber, and two partnered assassins whose bickering is as sharp as their knives. The Champion of Darkness has used the empty years well. From his tower, with a parrot called Mother, he does deals with the Androids and bullies his servant, a cat-eared young man who cannot remember where he came from. Between voyages with pirates, a pocket dimension where his fears are waiting for him and a game show stocked with curious beasts and stranger babies, Samo must hang on to his boots, mend what he can of the world and of himself, and face the grief he has been outrunning. In a war with no last chapter, every quiet hour has its price. But a month's peace, he is starting to think, is still a month. Book One of From the Beyond World: a dark comedy fantasy.
