L'oeuvre est un récit qui se développe dans le jeu des intérêts politiques autour des personnages Dagbenonwato, Egblemakou Yovogan et Dapém, bien ancrés dans l'esprit de leur nom. Elle est l'illustration du fait que la politique est un tissu de mensonges, une grande farce. On l'entend bien avec le grand maître spirituel Amouray lorsqu'interpellé sur la guéguerre qui oppose Dagbenonwato et Egblemakou il insinue qu'il n'en est rien. Ce personnage fulgurant a tout le mérite de son titre, dans son appel à la cohésion sociale où n'entrent pas les partis pris belliqueux et les soutiens fanatiques. Le récit compose aussi avec un personnage atypique, un panafricaniste obstiné qui n'obtiendra guère l'assentiment de ses concitoyens. Il restera seul dans ce combat risqué contre un certain impérialisme étranger et n'en sortira pas sauf. Bref, l'oeuvre est une histoire éclectique qui se découvre dans des analepses et de grandes réflexions philosophiques.
