Francisco José Gómez Argüello Wirtz, known as Kiko Argüello, was born on January 9, 1939 in León, Spain. He studied Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, where in 1959 he received the Special National Painting Award. After an existential crisis and a deep conversion, he decided to live among the poor in the shantytowns of Palomeras Altas, Madrid, inspired by the spirituality of Charles de Foucauld. There, along with Carmen Hernández, he started in 1964 the Neocatechumenal Way, a Christian formation itinerary approved by the Holy See and present in more than 130 countries

In addition to his evangelizing work, Argüello has developed a notable artistic and literary career. He has composed more than 300 religious songs compiled in the book "Resucitó" and has painted numerous works of sacred art in churches around the world. In the literary field, his books "The Kerygma: In the Shantytowns with the Poor" (2012) and "Annotations. 1988-2014" (2016), both belonging to the genre of religious essay, stand out. In recognition of his contribution to the Church and evangelization, he has received honorary doctorates from institutions such as the Pontifical John Paul II Institute and the Catholic University of America.
