José Benegas (Buenos Aires, 1963) is a lawyer, essayist, and journalist from Argentina specialized in political philosophy, economics, and institutional issues. He graduated in Law from the University of Buenos Aires in 1987 and obtained a master's degree in Economics and Political Science at ESEADE in 2005.

He is the author of several books, including The Morality of the Rapist (1997), Let's Be Free (2013), 10 False Ideas that Favor Despotism (2014), and The Unthinkable: The Curious Case of Liberals Mutating to Fascism (2018). In this last work, Benegas analyzes how certain sectors of liberalism have adopted positions close to nationalism, protectionism, and other ideas associated with the far right. The author criticizes this ideological "mutation" and seeks to distinguish between true liberalism and these trends.

Benegas has been awarded the "Brave Defense of Freedom" prize by the Atlas Foundation in 2005 and has received honorary mentions in the "Paths of Freedom" contest by TV Azteca. He is a member of the committee of the Interamerican Institute for Democracy based in Miami and is part of the Honorary Council of the Liberal Libertarian Party.

Currently, Benegas hosts the program This Tongue is Mine on FM Identidad 92.1 and is a correspondent for the station in the United States. He continues to be an active voice in the public debate on political and social issues in Latin America.
