La capacité des colonies bactériennes à induire une hémolyse lorsqu'elles se développent sur une gélose au sang est utilisée pour classer certains micro-organismes. Il existe trois types d'hémolyse: alpha, bêta et gamma. L'hémolyse alpha est une hémolyse partielle, appelée hémolyse verte en raison du changement de couleur de la gélose. L'hémolyse bêta est une hémolyse complète, c'est-à-dire une lyse complète des globules rouges dans le milieu, qui apparaissent alors clairs et transparents. L'hémolyse gamma est non hémolytique.
