Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve fue una escritora francesa nacida en París en 1685, considerada una figura clave en la evolución del cuento de hadas literario. Proveniente de una familia acomodada, su vida estuvo marcada por dificultades económicas tras enviudar joven, lo que la llevó a integrarse activamente en los círculos literarios parisinos del siglo XVIII. Allí desarrolló una obra influida por la tradición de autores como Charles Perrault, pero con una mirada más compleja y dirigida a un público adulto.

Es especialmente conocida por haber escrito la primera versión extensa de La Bella y la Bestia en 1740, incluida en La jeune américaine et les contes marins.
