Mi obra comprende un vasto libro semejante al de Proust, excepto por el hecho de que mis recuerdos están escritos sobre la marcha, y no, por mucho después, en un lecho de enfermo. Las objeciones de mis primeros editores me impidieron usar en cada obra los mismos nombres para los personajes. En el camino, Los subterráneos, Los vagabundos de Dharma, Doctor Sax, Maggie Cassidy, Tristessa, Ángeles de la desolación, Visiones de Cody, y todos los demás, incluyendo este libro, Big Sur, no son sino capítulos de la obra total que llamo La leyenda de Duluoz. Tengo la intención de recopilar en mi vejez toda mi obra y reinsertar mi panteón de nombres uniformes, dejar una enorme biblioteca repleta de libros, y morir feliz. La totalidad conforma una comedia colosal, vistas con los ojos del pobre Ti Jean (yo mismo), conocido también como Jack Duluoz; el mundo de la acción furiosa y de la demencia y también de la mansa dulzura visto a través de la cerradura de su ojo.
