Joe Sacco (born October 2, 1960 in Kirkop, Malta) is a Maltese-American author and graphic journalist, a pioneer in the field of journalistic comics. His unique style combines investigative journalism with graphic narrative, creating works that document war conflicts and situations of social injustice.

After moving to the United States in his youth, Sacco studied at the University of Oregon and began his career as an illustrator. In 1991, he traveled to Palestine to cover the situation in the occupied territories, resulting in his most influential work: Palestine (2001). This graphic novel, based on his experiences in the West Bank and Gaza, offers a deep insight into Palestinian life during the Israeli occupation. The work was recognized with the National Book Award in 1996 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2001.

Subsequently, Sacco addressed other conflicts, such as the Bosnian War in Safe Area Goražde (2000) and the Gaza incidents in Footnotes in Gaza (2009). His approach is characterized by direct immersion in conflict zones, conducting interviews and documenting on the ground, often without official credentials, which allows him a more authentic and close perspective of the events.

In 2020, he published Paying the Land, a work that explores the history and contemporary challenges of indigenous peoples in Canada. More recently, in 2024, he released War in Gaza, a strong critique of American policy in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, where he denounces what he considers a possible genocide and questions the complicity of political figures such as

Throughout his career, Sacco has been awarded several prizes, including the Eisner Award and the Ridenhour Book Prize for Non-Fiction. In 2023, he received an honorary Doctor of Literature degree from the University of Malta.

Joe Sacco continues to be an influential figure in the realm of comics and journalism, using his art to shed light on the hidden realities of war conflicts and social injustices.
