Caer es una isla en medio de ninguna parte. Sus habitantes buscan escapar, generación tras generación, de esa trampa mortal, de ese desierto en el que no crece ninguna forma de vida, y donde los días vuelven sobre sí como el eterno retorno de lo mismo. Porque la existencia ahí es insoportable, los habitantes de la isla han creado una sociedad donde la forma más alta de altruismo consiste en exterminarse, física y moralmente, los unos a los otros. Su gran sueño es escapar de Caer, saltar, volar, pero todos se vienen abajo irremediablemente. Todos, sin embargo, siguen escrutando el cielo, sólo para seguir odiando y maldiciendo la tierra de Caer. Y para esperar el regreso de su deforme mesías, Ilinuk, el único ser que ha podido escapar de la isla, y que prometió volver para salvarlos a todos.
