En la década de los ochenta del siglo pasado, compré una casita modesta en Playa Chiquita de Puerto Viejo de Limón, Costa Rica. Entonces no había electricidad ni agua potable, lo que me obligaba a llevar un estilo de vida elemental y austero, compensado por la grandiosidad del mar Caribe frente a mis ojos. En ese lugar de infinita paz y maravilloso silencio escribí esta novela. Tengo con las tertulias de mis vecinos -como la familia Downer que todavía vive ahí- y con el comisariato de Manuel León una muy merecida e impagable deuda de gratitud.
