Reflejo del dolor por el dolor de los humildes, de los indios de su tierra, Emilio Abreu Gómez escribio  Canek en 1940, años después de que escuchara la historias y leyendas que contaban  en la cocina algunas indígenas sobre el antiguo héroe maya quien, dirigió una sublevación contra los españoles durante 1761 en la población Yucateco de Cisteil. El autor transformo esas conversaciones y sus futuras lecturas acerca del tema en una conmovedora narración que retrata no sólo el abuso cotidiano sufrido por el pueblo, sino también la impotencia de su unión, de la amistad y de la solidaridad.
