Stefan Zweig tuvo durante toda su vida la necesidad de intercambiar correspondencia, de establecer y mantener contactos. Mediaba la veintena cuando empezó a enviar sus primeros libros, junto con unas líneas de cortesía, a personalidades ya célebres por aquel entonces. Muchas de las respuestas dieron pie a una relación personal cuyos testimonios se han conservado. Con el presente volumen, los compiladores han querido transmitir una impresión lo más concreta posible tanto del peculiar talento de Stefan Zweig para dirigirse a sus corresponsales como de sus manifestaciones personales. Para ello, han seleccionado epistolarios muy diversos en su género. Si hubiera que caracterizar dicha correspondencia, la mantenida con Freud podría calificarse de respetuosamente admirativa (lo que no excluye malentendidos), la mantenida con Rainer Maria Rilke de cortés y de intercambio de ideas más o menos objetivo, y la mantenida con Arthur Schnitzler de estimulante y amistosa. Lo que tienen en común todas ellas es haberse iniciado en los primeros años del siglo XX, entre 1904 y 1908, y extendido hasta poco antes de la muerte de cada uno de los corresponsales, a los que Stefan Zweig --el más joven de todos-- sobrevivió.
