Con una prosa cargada de ironía, sobria y precisa, Mario Benedetti logra trascender la individualidad de sus modestos personajes, inmersos en existencias grises siempre acechadas por posibilidades dramáticas, para ofrecer al lector un cuadro veraz y complejo de la sociedad contemporánea.

Mario Benedetti was born in Paso de los Toros, Uruguay in 1920. He was educated at a German school and made a living as a stenographer, cashier, salesperson, accountant, public servant, translator, and journalist, a profession he practiced for four decades at the weekly Marcha, until it was shut down by the dictatorship. That same dictatorship forced him into exile in 1973, after which he lived successively in Argentina, Peru, Cuba, and Spain. A storyteller, poet, essayist, and playwright, he authored more than seventy books translated into eighteen languages. Among his literary works, the poetic anthologies Inventario and Inventario Dos, the novels La tregua, Gracias por el fuego, Primavera con una esquina rota, the short story collections Montevideanos, La muerte y otras sorpresas, Con y sin nostalgia, and the verse novel El cumpleaños de Juan Ángel stand out.
