Synopsis "Culpables, los"

Cuando comencé a colaborar con Almadía, hace casi tres lustros, ya concebían sus colecciones como un regalo para los lectores. Los Culpables fue el primer libro que les diseñé, es 2007. Pensé en una propuesta gráfica que sorprendiera: el reto consistió en traer al papel la atmósfera colorida, táctil y artesanal de Oaxaca. Supe que tenía la oportunidad de hacer algo distinto en términos de diseño gráfico. Leí el libro y me divertí muchísimo; los cuentos son cortos y con un sentido del humor excepcional. Platicando con el equipo, acordamos que la imagen emblemática de la portada debía desprenderse de la frase “La culpa es de la iguana”, que abre el quinto relato del libro, “El crepúsculo maya”. La doble portada de “Los culpables” inició un doble juego que pervive hasta hoy. En ese entonces, Juan Villoro comentó que así como la iguana cambia de cuero, los libros de Almadía son despellejables y la camisa es una segunda piel que deja entrever la imagen secreta en la portada. Arriesgué en el diseño porque Almadía se abrió al cambio. Quizá el suaje de la camisa es más atrevido que hemos llevado a la imprenta: el reptil era demasiado grande y en la primera edición la “segunda piel” fue muy frágil. Desde entonces, esta obra ha sido reimpresa y reeditada muchas veces, convirtiéndose en la que más lectores tiene en la historia de la editorial. A partir de la primera reimpresión, modifiqué el diseño y agregué una rama que atraviesa el cuerpo del saurópsido para darle mayor resistencia y fuerza a la cartulina. Para celebrar su sétimo aniversario, Almadía publicó una edición conmemorativa de esta misma obra en formato grande. Pasta dura e ilustrada por mí. Esos dibujos son miradas tangenciales a los divertidos relatos de Juan. Me parecía un gesto cacofónico traer a lo gráfico imágenes que están descritas en el relato, así que preferí representar escenas que quizás pudieran haber sucedido, convirtiendo las imágenes en satélites del universo narrativo del autor.

Writer and journalist, Juan Villoro was born in Mexico City in 1956. He has been a professor at UNAM, and a visiting professor at the universities of Yale, Princeton, Stanford, and Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, as well as at the New Journalism Foundation, created by Gabriel García Márquez. He is a columnist for Reforma (Mexico), has written for international media such as The New York Times (US), El País (Spain) and El Mercurio (Chile), among others. He was the director of La Jornada Semanal.

He studied Sociology at the Metropolitan Autonomous University-Iztapalapa. He is a doctor honoris causa by the Michoacan University of San Nicolás de Hidalgo and by the Metropolitan Autonomous University. Since 2014 he is a member of El Colegio Nacional.

In 2012 he received the Ibero-American José Donoso Award and in 2018 the Manuel Rojas Award, both awarded in Chile, for his body of work. Among the recognitions he has received in Mexico is the Mazatlán Literature Award for his book of literary essays Personal Effects and the Xavier Villaurrutia Award for his book of stories The House Loses.

He received in Spain the Herralde Award for his novel The Witness; in Argentina the ACE Award for his play Philosophy of Life and in Cuba the José María Arguedas Award for his novel Reef. His journalistic work has been recognized with the King of Spain International Journalism Award, City of Barcelona Award, Manuel Vázquez Montalbán International Journalism Award, as well as the Fernando Benítez Tribute of the International Book Fair, and the Award for Journalistic Excellence, granted by the Gabo Foundation (Colombia), 2022.

His novel for young people The Wild Book has sold more than one million copies.
