Demian (1919) fue publicada luego de la Primera Guerra Mundial durante un periodo caracterizado por una fuerte crítica contra el racionalismo y el positivismo del siglo XIX. Los horrores de la guerra marcaron a la sociedad europea e impactaron tanto en los intelectuales como en los artistas. Hermann Hesse vuelca en esta, así como en otras de sus novelas, conocimientos provenientes del saber occidental y místico oriental concernientes a la religión, literatura, filosofía y artes. La introspección psicoanalítica, el irracionalismo nietzscheano, el gnosticismo (tendencia religiosa ecléctica que busca la integración de los credos religiosos) y el cristianismo conforman los referentes culturales específicos de Demian, que aparece en un momento de notable agitación política, social y cultural: el periodo de entreguerras.

Herman Hesse was born in 1877 in Calw. He followed professions as diverse as a clergyman and a mechanic, but with the publication of his first novel, Peter Camenzind (1904), he managed to establish himself as a writer. His literary work placed him among the most important authors of the 20th century. His most notable titles are: Demian (1919), Siddhartha (1922), Steppenwolf (1927), and The Glass Bead Game (1943). Among many other distinctions, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946. He died in 1962, at the age of 85 in Montagnola.
