Ein Navajo-Junge stellt seine Eltern, seinen Bruder und seine Schwestern vor und beschreibt die traditionelle Lebensweise seiner Familie in den vierziger Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts. Dargestellt wird das Leben einer Navajo Hirtenfamilie und der Weiterverarbeitung der Schafswolle per Hand. Sein Vater baut ein traditionelles Navajo Haus aus Baumstämmen, einen Hogan, und wir lesen über eine Schwitzhüttenzeremonie und lernen andere traditionelle Aktivitäten der Navajos kennen. Authentisch illustriert vom einem Navajo Künstler, Gerald Nailor, erinnert uns das Buch an einen langsameren, naturnahen, gesünderen Lebensstil. Dieser wird selbst bei den heutigen im Reservat lebenden Navajos nur noch selten so praktiziert. Das Buch wurde ursprünglich im Jahre 1940 von der Bildungsabteilung des Bureau of Indian Affairs veröffentlicht.
