Mit dieser Aussage hat Oskar Ewald die Idee der Aufklärung in ihren Grundsätzen auf den Punkt gebracht. Ewald, bis 1928 Privatdozent für Philosophie in Wien, später von den Nationalsozialisten politisch verfolgt, zeichnet in seinem Werk von 1924 die Ideengeschichte der Aufklärung in Frankreich nach. Ewald gelingt mit seiner skeptischen Perspektive, seiner ambivalenten Bewertung und dem angenehmen Erzählstil seiner Darstellung der Spagat zwischen Darstellung und Analyse der Französische Aufklärungsphilosophie.
