Im Zentrum steht die konfliktreiche Einführung von Computern für die intensivmedizinische Diagnostik und Dokumentation. Der Autor beobachtete für diese Studie zwei Jahre lang in der Form teilnehmender Beobachtung auf Intensivstationen die Auseinandersetzungen um diese neuen Techniken. Die soziale Konstruktion des Computers in der Intensivmedizin verdeutlicht den in der Medizin ungelösten Konflikt zwischen der Medizin als Wissenschaft und ihrem Verständnis als Pflege.
