Kuno, su novio, quisiera desposarla para estar a su lado y cuidarla, pero la madre de Ineko cree que es mejor que la joven se cure primero y decide internarla.a La novela entera transcurre en un dia y recoge la charla que Kuno y la madre de Inako tienen en una posada cercana, despues de haberla dejado en el asilo Ikuta, ese hospital cercado por pasionarias y dientes de leon. Kuno llega a creer que la enfermedad de Inako es provocada por su amor. La madre de Inako, en cambio, atribuye la culpa a la muerte de su padre. Ambos se plantearan, en definitiva, si son el problema o la solucion a lo ocurrido con la chica.
