Synopsis "Down the Lane"

1803, London. Jack Wilkinson - a young well-bred man, with polite manners, and of a friendly disposition, has fallen on hard times, and is endeavouring to adjust to a life that he is not accustomed to. When Jack moves to a low neighbourhood, in Liver Lane, where the dregs of society roam, and when crime and poverty was at its peak, he is constantly horrified by his new surroundings and the eccentric, ragged people about him. Mr. Wilkinson is the new tenant of Laney House - a crooked, filthy house, situated at the end of the lane, which is owned by the shabby landlord, Mr. Bates. Once Jack begins to settle in his unfortunate situation in life, he soon becomes aware of all the horrors that endlessly haunt him...Meanwhile, at 36 Liver Lane, a renowned coachmaker named Mr. Felton is inventing something quite extraordinary for their time - The London Steam Carriage; and Jack Wilkinson falls hopelessly in love with Elena - a beautiful Italian damsel. However, Elena's uncle, Mr. Martinelli - a barometer maker, at 82 Liver Lane, never seems to warm to Jack's character. And a hoarder with peculiar habits named John (Jack's neighbour) is ever a burden on the wretched inhabitants of Laney House.
