Dr. David Mckendree Sarver wurde am 1. August 1951 in Auburn, Alabama, geboren. Sarver hat sich schon immer sowohl für die Wissenschaft als auch für die Praxis der Kieferorthopädie interessiert. Nachdem er 1979 seinen Master-Abschluss in Kieferorthopädie an der University of North Carolina erworben hatte, kehrte er an die UAB zurück und unterrichtete 15 Jahre lang an der School of Dentistry, während er gleichzeitig eine Vollzeitpraxis für Kieferorthopädie in Vestavia unterhielt und eine rege wissenschaftliche Tätigkeit ausübte. Sarvers Lehrbuch "Esthetic Orthodontics and Orthognathic Surgery" ist das Ergebnis seiner seit 1985 betriebenen Forschung. 2020 veröffentlichte er ein Buch über dentofaziale Ästhetik mit dem Titel "Dentofacial esthetics: from macro to micro". "Heutzutage geht es in der Kieferorthopädie um mehr als nur um das Richten von Zähnen", sagt Sarver, der 1977 seinen Abschluss an der School of Dentistry der UAB gemacht hat, "heute steht das gesamte Gesicht im Mittelpunkt."
