Ricketts è nato il 5 maggio 1920 a Kokomo, nell'Indiana. Entrò nella scuola di odontoiatria risparmiando ogni centesimo che poteva raccogliere. Ha conseguito la laurea in odontoiatria presso la Indiana University School of Dentistry nel 1945. Successivamente si è arruolato nella Marina degli Stati Uniti come dentista per due anni e infine è andato all'Università dell'Illinois per studiare ortodonzia. Ha conseguito il master nel 1950. È stato professore in molte università del mondo, tra cui la Loma Linda University, Università dell'Illinois a Chicago. Durante la sua vita è stato membro di 17 società professionali e ha tenuto oltre 100 conferenze in tutto il mondo sull'ortodonzia. Nel 1981 ha fondato l'American Institute for Bioprogressive Education. Ha ricevuto un Merit Award dall'American Society of Dentistry for Children, il William Cogswell Distinguished Service Award in Oral Surgery, l'Albert H. Ketcham Award dall'American Board of Orthodontics, il John Mershon Lecture Honor, l'Associated Journals of Europe Award, lo Strang Award della Connecticut State Society of Orthodontics e un Waldron Lecturer Award dell'American Society of Plastic and Reconceptive Surgeons. Si ritirò all'età di 72 anni.
