" Es war ein warmer Augustabend und die Luft ruhig, als wir unsern Wagen verlie en. Mein Freund, der Steuerrath, führte mich um das Dorf herum, an Wiesen vorüber, nach einem Wäldchen von Fichten, Birken und einzelnen Buchen. Wir waren in Dunkelheit und Stille gegangen. Als wir in das Wäldchen hineinschritten, war es darin noch dunkeler und stiller, als es am Dorfe und an den Wiesen gewesen war. Wir konnten in dem Wäldchen hundert Schritte zurückgelegt haben. Gerade vor uns, aber noch in weiter Ferne, wurde ein schwacher, unbestimmter Lichtschimmer wahrnehmbar. In derselben Richtung vernahm das Ohr ein unbestimmtes, summendes Geräusch..."
