Una mujer ante una sociedad en la que el aborto es un tabú (y un delito).En octubre de 1963, cuando Annie Ernaux se halla en Ruan estudiando filología, descubre que está embarazada. En una sociedad en la que se penaliza el aborto con prisión y multa, Annie Ernaux se encuentra sola; hasta su pareja se desentiende del asunto. Después de pasar por varios médicos que cierran los ojos ante su problema, y de intentar pedir ayuda entre sus conocidos y amigos, consigue que una mujer que ha pasado por la misma situación le dé una dirección y le preste la enorme suma de dinero que necesitará. Además del desamparo y la discriminación por parte de una sociedad que le vuelve la espalda, queda la lucha frente al profundo horror y dolor de un aborto clandestino

Annie Ernaux was born in 1940 in the French region of Normandy. She grew up in the small town of Yvetot and studied literature at the University of Rouen. A teacher of that subject in high schools in Annecy and the Parisian suburbs, she currently lives near the French capital and works at the Centre National d’Enseignement par Correspondance. At Tusquets Editores we have published Pure Passion, Shame, The Event, and The Place (Renaudot Prize, 1984). In 2019, she received the Formentor Prize for her body of work.
