Synopsis "El Hombre de Cincuenta Años (in Spanish)"

En 1807, a sus cincuenta y ocho años, Goethe comienza El hombre de cincuenta años, un relato sobre la madurez y las decisiones que se llevan a cabo durante esta. Se trata de un relato introspectivo sobre William Whittlestaff, un soltero quincuagenario que acoge a la hija de un amigo cuando este fallece y de quien se enamora profundamente. Al protagonista le podríamos identificar con el autor, teniendo así una parte biográfica, pues se conoce que, aún sin finalizar esta obra, en 1823, el autor se enamora juvenilmente de una adolescente, Ulrike. Ante la negativa de esta joven, a diferencia del relato que parece ser una versión paralela recogida de textos contemporáneos, Goethe escribirá ese verano un bellísimo poema: la «Elegía de Marienbad». Derivado de esta historia de amor, se produjo un escándalo que promovió la incomprensión de su familia, así como el testimonio de la propia Ulrike.

Poet, novelist, playwright, scientist, and German politician. At the University of Strasbourg, he met Herder, who introduced him to the works of Shakespeare and whom he later helped to create the German Romantic movement Sturm und Drang. In 1775, Charles Augustus, heir to the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar, invited Goethe to live and work in Weimar, which was then one of the intellectual and literary centers of Germany. There, he developed a brilliant political career which he eventually abandoned to dedicate himself to traveling and writing. He is one of the greatest literary exponents of Romanticism and for many the most important writer in German literature.
