Synopsis "El Polaco (in Spanish)"

Provocativa variación de una historia legendaria, en esta nueva y breve novela de J.M. Coetzee un hombre y una mujer se encuentran. El escenario es la ciudad de Barcelona, lo que los une en un principio es la música de Chopin. Pero ese encuentro no sucede del modo en que ni uno ni el otro lo hubiera deseado, y sin embargo esta historia algo trágica e incompleta recrea una de las más clásicas leyendas de amor de la literatura occidental. Las barreras no son solo del orden de los sentimientos. Witold es polaco y Beatriz es española, y en un principio solo tienen la lengua inglesa para hacerse entender. Más tarde, la forma más esquiva de la traducción será la clave para un último acercamiento entre ambos.

Diferencias de gustos, diferencias culturales, diferencias de los sexos: sobre estas tensiones está narrada esta variación moderna e irónica de la historia de Dante y Beatrice. Para lograrlo, J.M. Coetzee hace un cambio rotundo de perspectiva, pues lo feliz y lo fallido de este amor a medias está contado desde la perspectiva precisa, sincera y aguda de su protagonista mujer.

John Maxwell Coetzee (Cape Town, 1940) is a South African writer naturalized Australian, known for his austere style and focus on themes such as power, identity, and ethics. He studied literature at the universities of Cape Town and Texas, and has been a professor at the University of Cape Town. In 2003, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature for his contribution to universal letters.

Among his most notable works are Life & Times of Michael K (1983), awarded the Booker Prize that same year, and Disgrace (1999), which also received the Booker Prize, making him the first author to win it twice. Other notable novels include Waiting for the Barbarians (1980), Foe (1986), and Elizabeth Costello (2003). His literary output includes novels, essays, and autobiographies.
