Un relato sobre la vida y relaciones de tres familias recién instaladas en tres casas de una nueva urbanización a las afueras de Londres.

En las afueras de Londres (Beyond the city) es la sexta novela de Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) y fue publicada por vez primera en 1892, el mismo año en que aparecieron Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes, tercer volumen de la serie. Últimamente ha vuelto a ser varias veces reeditada en Gran Bretaña y los Estados Unidos, no así entre nosotros; lo que quizás se deba a que no es un novela histórica o de aventuras sino de costumbres contemporáneas, un tanto dickensiana, en la que se entrelazan el humor y el suspense. Trata de la vida y relaciones de tres familias recién instaladas en tres casas de una nueva urbanización a las afueras de Londres. La única edición castellana, hasta la fecha, (que incluía también el relato de misterio Nuestra señora de la muerte) apareció hace ya más de un siglo.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Edinburgh, 1859 - Crowborough, United Kingdom, 1930) considered the master of detective literature was a writer and doctor born in Scotland, mainly known for having created the very famous character Sherlock Holmes, the most well-known detective of all times, cyclically adapted for TV and cinema

He studied at the universities of Stonyhurst and Edinburgh, where he graduated in medicine. Between 1882 and 1890, he worked as a doctor in Southsea, England.

To supplement his meager income, he wrote a mystery novel titled A Study in Scarlet, which became the first of sixty-eight stories featuring one of the most famous detectives in literature: Sherlock Holmes.
