En 1571, tras sufrir un accidente montando a caballo, Michel de Montaigne abandona su posición como magistrado de Burdeos para retirarse a su castillo y empezar a escribir. Ese es el inicio, casi novelesco, de una de las obras más importantes de la cultura occidental. «No enseño ni adoctrino, lo que hago es relatar», afirma Montaigne. Y entretanto dialoga con los pensadores clásicos sobre todo tipo de cuestiones relativas a la condición humana. Sus escritos son continuas tentativas de encontrar respuestas casi como si se tratara de un experimento, una probatura, un essai, un ensayo. El hilo conductor: una reflexión acerca de «sí mismo».

Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne, 1533 – 1592), philosopher, humanist, and moralist, was one of the most important thinkers of the French Renaissance. He studied Law and served as a magistrate in Bordeaux before retiring to his castle to devote himself to reading and contemplation. At the age of thirty-eight, he began writing The Essays, a masterpiece that popularized the essay as a literary form. He has been described as the most classic of the moderns and the most modern of the classics.
