Der Autor, zuletzt Grossadmiral des Deutschen Reiches, war ab 1897 Staatssekretar im Reichsmarineamt und treibende Kraft beim Ausbau der deutschen Hochseeflotte. Nach seinem Tirpitzplan" sollte die Aufrustung der deutschen Flotte uber zwanzig Jahre eine annahernde Gleichrangigkeit mit der englischen Flotte und damit eine Vormachtstellung in der Nordsee erreichen. Tirpitz war auch fur die Entwicklung des Handels- und Flottenstutzpunktes Tsingtau in China verantwortlich. In den Erinnerungen ist die personliche Biografie von Tirpitz' eng mit einer Darstellung der Entwicklung der politisch-militarischen Verhaltnisse vor und wahrend des Ersten Weltkrieges verflochten. Tirpitz hat das Buch als eine Rechtfertigung seiner Politik verfasst, die er als friedensbewahrend verstand. Nachdruck der Originalausgabe aus dem Jahr 1920
