Among his most notable books are Los albañiles (1963), Estudio Q (1981), and El evangelio de Lucas Gavilán (1979). In the theatrical field, he wrote La mudanza (1979) and Asesinato (1991), establishing himself as one of the most relevant voices in Mexican theater.

Leñero was also an influential journalist, contributing to publications like Proceso, where he played a key role in investigative journalism in Mexico. His direct narrative style and commitment to social reality marked his work, exploring themes of injustice and corruption.
