Synopsis "Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation - Evolving Innovations: Evolving Innovations"

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) has evolved over the years into a mainstream supportive therapy that has saved countless lives that otherwise would have been considered lost. Much of the progress has been from advances in patient selection, ECMO Team dynamics, and a broader understanding of the complex interactions between a critically ill patient and an artificial extracorporeal circuit. The tragic need for progress has accelerated all of this progress during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the silver lining has been a substantial increase in ECMO utilization and improved outcomes in very complex cardio-pulmonary disease, such as both adult and pediatric advanced cardiogenic shock and respiratory failure. Importantly, ECMO has been instrumental as a supportive therapy for high-risk, life-saving interventions such as heart/lung transplantation, percutaneous catheter-based interventions, and countless other evolving therapies that previously would have been considered too high risk but can now be performed routinely worldwide. As the global use of ECMO grows each year, so does our collective understanding of this very complex, invasive, and challenging therapy. While ECMO is more of a supportive therapy than a curative one, its use sometimes helps provide the greatest need in patient care - time to treat and time to allow the body to heal.
