Synopsis "Facsímil (in Spanish)"

Decir que Facsímil es una novela sería tan aventurado como decir que no lo es. Quizás sea mejor decir solamente que es un libro de Alejandro Zambra, porque el estilo y los temas que lo han convertido en una voz imprescindible de la literatura latinoamericana se despliegan, aquí, de manera radical y extrema. A partir de la estructura de la Prueba de Aptitud Verbal, aplicada en Chile desde 1967 hasta 2002 a los postulantes a las universidades, el autor crea una obra donde los relatos conviven con fragmentos líricos y ejercicios de lenguaje que más bien constituyen problemas éticos: la necesidad de mentir para validarse ante los demás; la voluntad de establecer vínculos a pesar de la desconfianza en el amor y en la familia; la dificultad de desplazarse por un campo minado de secretos; la desoladora convicción de que, más que aprender a pensar, fuimos entrenados para obedecer y repetir. Facsímil se pasea por temas que nos interpelan como sociedad –la desigualdad, la memoria, la educación– y muestra a un autor que sigue arriesgando y proyectando una obra que se distingue por su precisión, contundencia y, sobre todo, por esa tonalidad única en la que se conjugan la rabia, el humor y la delicadeza.

Alejandro Zambra (Santiago de Chile, 1975) has published, among others, the novels Bonsai (2006), The Private Lives of Trees (2007), Ways of Going Home (2011) and Chilean Poet (2020), the short story collection My Documents (2014), the essay collections Not to Read (2018) and Free Topic (2019), and a couple of books that are quite more difficult to classify, like the very unique Facsimile, which Anagrama reissued in 2021, and Children's Literature (2023), a series of tales, fiction and non-fiction, about childhood and parenthood

His novels have been translated into twenty languages, and his stories have appeared in magazines such as The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Paris Review, Granta, Harper’s, and McSweeney’s. He has been a fellow at the New York Public Library and has received, among other distinctions, the English Pen Award, the O. Henry Prize, and the Prince Claus Award.
