Fedra percibe su inclinación por su hijastro, Hipólito, pero la combate. Al ser informada equivocadamente de que Teseo, su marido, ha muerto, confiesa su amor a un horrorizado Hipólito. Este huye, pues su verdadero amor es Aricia. Y ahí se desencadena la tragedia, ya narrada en el Hipólito de Eurípides y también por Séneca.Jean Racine (1639-1699) es considerado uno de los tres grandes dramaturgos franceses del siglo XVII, junto a Corneille y Molière. Fue miembro de la Academia francesa e historiógrafo de Luis XIV. Escribió sobre todo tragedia (Fedra, Andrómaca, Británico, Berenice, etc.), a veces de contenidos bíblicos (Esther, Atalía), y también alguna comedia (Los Litigantes).
