Synopsis "Free"

He paid the price for survival. Now, he's choosing to be free.Growing up on the Northside of 1990s St. Louis, Dr. Kempton Freeman learned early that survival required a mask. In a world shaped by street rules, systemic failure, and sudden loss, showing vulnerability felt like an invitation to danger. From stepping up as a child caregiver to coping with the deaths of his father and brother, Kempton learned to lock his pain behind an armor of stoicism, performance, and strength. From the outside, he was a story of overcoming the odds-earning his doctorate, becoming a respected coach, educator, and devoted father. But behind closed doors, he carried the suffocating weight of survivor's guilt, hidden mental health battles, and unspoken grief.FREE: The Costs of Becoming Me is an unvarnished, raw memoir about stripping off the mask. With deeply honest reflections on family dysfunction, trauma, healing, and faith, Dr. Freeman explores the true price of overcoming where you come from-and what it takes to finally give yourself permission to live fully, authentically, and freely.
