Walt Whitman va néixer a West Hills, comtat de Suffolk (Nova York), lany 1819 en el cor duna família nombrosa que creia en els ideals quàquers, uns ideals marcats per la responsabilitat i per una espiritualitat fervents. Quan tenia onze anys va haver dabandonar lescola i començar a treballar en diferents oficis, un dells com a ajudant dimpressor i, fins i tot, com a redactor a diferents diaris de lèpoca. Va arribar a ser tan conegut que va rebre lencàrrec descriure una novella moralista que condemnés lalcohol, un problema de lèpoca. El títol era Franklin Evans or The Inebriate, i va esdevenir un èxit amb més de vint mil exemplars venuts a lany 1842. Quan va esclatar la Guerra de Secessió (1861-1865), Whitman va anar dhospital en hospital i de campament en campament a la recerca del seu germà desaparegut en la batalla. Es va convertir en un guaridor expert en consolar ferits, fer refals als malalts i en escriure o llegir cartes per als moribunds. El profund impacte daquest conflicte de terribles proporcions el va canviar per sempre i el va inspirar a lhora descriure els seus diaris, Democratic Vistas (1871) i Specimen Days (1882), però també a lhora de rebutjar tot el que havia dut a terme fins aleshores. Whitman va esdevenir un eremita i un profeta, la veu encarnada dAmèrica, i va voler escriure el llibre suprem, Fulles dherba, un poemari en el que va estar treballant durant quaranta anys i que va anar ampliant a través de diferents revisions. Va morir a Candem, Nova Jersey, lany 1892 després dhaver donat per definitiva la setena edició de Fulles dherba, que ara arriba sencera en català per primer cop.

Walt Whitman (1819-1892) is, undoubtedly, the most influential poet in American literature. He was born in West Hills, Long Island, the second of nine children in a family close to the Quaker creed. At the age of eleven, he finished his formal education and began working as an apprentice at the weekly The Patriot, where he would start writing his first texts. After working for other newspapers and magazines, in 1850 he decided to fully dedicate himself to poetry. Five years later, the first edition of the famous Leaves of Grass was published, consisting of twelve poems and whose 795 copies were funded by the author himself. The poetry collection aroused great interest and was widely distributed, partly due to the fascination it sparked in philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson. During the Civil War, Whitman voluntarily served as a nurse in Washington D.C., an experience he would capture in The Great Army of the Sick (1863) and Memories of the War (1875). After the conflict ended in 1965, he published Drum-Taps. While employed at the Attorney General's Office, Whitman continued to raise the pen to write verses like those of "O Captain! My Captain!", which, along with others, would complete the successive editions of Leaves of Grass up to the ninth and definitive, which consisted of a total of more than four hundred poems.
