Synopsis "George Sterling"

George Sterling (1869–1926) was a leading California poet and was informally referred to as the “poet laureate of San Francisco.” Mentored by Ambrose Bierce, he later became a close colleague of such writers as Jack London, Clark Ashton Smith, Theodore Dreiser, H. L. Mencken, and many others. This volume attempts, for the first time, to chart Sterling’s wide-ranging publications—from books of poetry, letters, and other matter published during and after his lifetime to the thousands of poems, essays, plays, and other work published in magazines and newspapers around the country. It also includes citations to works about him—books, articles, newspaper pieces, and book reviews, and even poems written in his honor. S. T. Joshi and Alan Gullette are among the leading authorities on Sterling and have spent decades poring through archives in California and elsewhere to chart the diverse material by and about Sterling. This is a work of scholarship that will endure for decades. Read more
