William Somerset Maugham fue médico, viajero, escritor profesional y agente secreto. Comenzó su carrera como novelista, prosiguió como dramaturgo y luego alternó el relato y la novela. Fue un escritor rico y popular: escribió veinte novelas, más de veinte piezas de teatro influidas la mayoría por Oscar Wilde y alrededor de cien cuentos cortos.
