प्रेमचंद का अंतिम व् महत्वपूर्ण उपन्यास गोदान क शासन के अंतर्गत किसान के महाजनी व्यवस्था में चलने वाले निरंतर शोषण तथा उससे उत्पन्न संत्रास कथा है. तत्कालीन भारत की सामाजिक, राजनितिक एवं आर्थिक परिस्तिथियों को तथा उस समय के गरीबों पर हो रहे शोषण को उजागर करने वाला यह उपन्यास मुंशी प्रेमचंद का अंतिम पूर्ण उपन्यास है I गोदान का नायक होरी एक किसान है जो किसान वर्ग के प्रतिनिधि के तौर पर मौजूद है. होरी और उसके परिवार के अन्य सदस्यों जैसे धनिया, रूपा, सोना, गोबर और झुनिया की कहानी सुनाने वाला ये उपन्यास जातिवाद और पूंजीवाद जैसी अनेक समस्याओं तथा उनके गरीब नागरिकों पर पड़ने वाले प्रभाव को भी दर्शाता है. यह सिर्फ़ होरी की कहानी नहीं बल्कि उस काल के हर भारतीय किसान की कथा है. गोदान के गाँव और शहर की दो कथाओं का यथार्थ रूप और संतुलित मिश्रण प्रस्तुत किया गया है. दोनों कथाओं का संगठन इतनी कुशलता से हुआ है कि उसमें प्रवाह बना रहता है. यह रचना तब और भी महत्वपूर्ण बन जाती है, जब प्रेमचंद भारत के ाओसे कालखंड का वर्णन करते है जिसमें सामंती समाज के अंग किसान और ज़मींदार दोनों ही मिट रहे है और पूंजीवादी समाज के मज़दूर तथा उद्योगपति उनकी जगह ले रहे &
