A first version of this text appeared in the Italian magazine Domus in October 1994 before it was included in Rem Koolhaas and Bruce Mau's book S, M, L, XL. Still, this theory of grandeur began to be formulated in Delirious New York. Several years later, OMA entered three large competitions--the Zeebrugge Sea Terminal, the National Library of France, and the ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe--that embodied the theoretical principles of grandeur: autonomy in each part of the building, the liberatory potential of the elevator, and independence between interior and exterior. Este ensayo hace un recorrido histórico por el significado que han ido adquiriendo los caminos y las carreteras como parte del entorno humano construido hasta convertirse en el elemento capital de las infraestructuras modernas que son hoy en día.
