Antes de cumplir sus veinte años, Andrés Caicedo comenzó sus labores como cineclubista y precoz crítico de las películas que él mismo programaba. En 1971 se consolidó su actividad al instalar el Cine Club de Cali en el Teatro San Fernando de su ciudad natal y no se detuvo hasta el día de su suicidio, el 4 de marzo de 1977. Caicedo no solo quiso ver y escribir sobre el cine. Quiso ser guionista y realizador. Con Carlos Mayolo dirigió un cortometraje titulado Angelita y Miguel Ángel basado en uno de sus relatos, el cual sería editado, en 1986, por Luis Ospina, para su documental Andrés Caicedo: unos pocos buenos amigos. Dos años después de su primera experiencia como director, el joven escritor procuraría vender sus propios guiones en Hollywood. Después de esa experiencia, Andrés Caicedo nunca volvería a ser el mismo.

Andrés Caicedo was born in Cali in 1951 and his work is considered one of the most original in Colombian literature. In his 25 years of life, he directed his own theatrical productions, wrote a considerable number of short stories, maintained an intense and elaborate correspondence, and ventured into the world of the novel with relentless passion and urgency. Similarly, cinema was one of his main obsessions, first as a filmmaker, then as a screenwriter, and finally as a sharp critic, founder of the magazine Ojo al cine and director of the Cine-Club de Cali. He committed suicide on March 4, 1977, the same day he received the first printed copy of ¡Que viva la música!, the novel for which he is remembered to this day and which has been translated into several languages. Among his most notable texts are the stories El atravesado, Angelitos empantanados o historias para jovencitos and the novel Noche sin fortuna.
